HOW MUCH POWER DO YOU NEED?
Power outages range from inconvenient to dangerous, but if you are prepared they don't have to be miserable. The first thing you need to do is ask yourself some basic questions. It's important to assess your personal risk, potential expense, or even bad outcomes for your health or safety if you were to lose power for more than a few hours. For example... ask yourself:
- If I were to lose all the food in my fridge and freezer, how much would it cost to replace it?
- Do I live in a climate where losing the ability to heat or cool my home could become dangerous?
- Does someone in my household need power for devices they use - like a cPap or oxygen machine, or do I have important devices like a feeding pump that requires a daily recharge?
- Does someone in my household have medications that require refrigeration?
A common mistake people make is buying a generator that's not big enough for their needs (or just the opposite... buying one that's WAY MORE than you need). This worksheet will help you decide what things are power NEEDS versus power WANTS and prioritizing the list will guide you to the generator that's sized best for your needs.

HOW DID I GET STARTED WITH EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS? After living on the East Coast for 7 years and experiencing our fair share of blizzards, Nor'Easters, and hurricanes - which all included power outages... we learned THE HARD WAY how important it is to have the right tools, equipment and supplies organized and ready to help make power outages less dangerous and more comfortable. Some of the harshest lessons we learned came when we lost power during Hurricane Sandy. We had no heat, no power and NO WATER... IN THE WINTER for 14 LONG DAYS. We were cold and not very well prepared to handle the temps; and did I mention my husband was fighting cancer at the time as well?! After that experience, we vowed to get better educated, better prepared and we made it a priority. We'll give you our BEST TIPS, TRICKS and equipment recommendations so you can be BETTER prepared NOW than we were THEN!
